Penyfan ascent FKT?

24/10/2017

I’ve come home for a week and just before I finish up my running season, I thought I’d make good use of my form and try to beat my PB on the uphill climb to Penyfan, from Pont Ar Daf.

I’d always wanted to own the fastest time for the ascent (and descent) of penyfan, and as far as I know it belongs to the Skyrunner and obstacle course racer, Jonathan Albon. He recorded on the Strava segment a time of 13’49” to the saddle, and 17’14” to the summit. I’ve looked online too but any other recorded times I could find were for different routes, like during the Penyfan race or Fan Dance.

I started my watch straight from the footbridge and made it to the saddle in 13’31”, by this point it was very painful! I got to the summit in 17’40” slicing about 30 seconds off the previous record. Super happy to make the time, although I think it could still be done a fair bit faster one day! I’ll try again in the future (probably a few times). I think as my physical fitness improves over time I could see achieving the summit in 16 minutes and to the saddle in 12 minutes.
